"There is a parable that tells the story of a peasant living in the suburbs of the city Kobe who was spending too much time on tending his cattle. During the warmer, seasonal time of year, he regularly gave his animals a self-made, special brew similar to beer. He would regularly brush his cattle with a rice straw, and he was doing it so reverently and so dutifully that one could say he was giving them every day massage. When it was time to slaughter, they discovered that the meat of his animals was uniquely delicate and soft. It was literally melting in the mouth. All neighbors, full of admiration, were competing about rasing the prices of the purchased meat. The peasant decided to start breeding cattle using this new technique that he had developed. That is how the story of Kobe beef started. Still today, cattle are given a special brew to drink, are regularly massaged and are allowed to walk freely in open meadows. This intense process of production or breeding is why the price of Kobe/Wagyu beef is so high. The difference between traditional beef and Kobe beef is so vast that food connosieurs are ready to pay whatever it may cost for the exquisite taste of Kobe/Wagyu beef"
